The Swiss Academy for Development (SAD) is looking for an executive director, to be based in Biel/Bienne, Switzerland. Application deadline: 18 January 2015

The Swiss Academy for Development (SAD) is a charitable foundation, independent of political or religious affiliation, based in Biel/Bienne, Switzerland. Since 1991, it has promoted development opportunities for young people in societies that are undergoing rapid and often conflictual processes of change. In its own operational pilot projects, SAD develops new approaches and methods, and implements them in partnership with local organisations on the ground. At the interface between science and practice, SAD generates research and practice oriented knowledge through studies and monitoring and evaluation, and passes it on to other relevant organisations (www.sad.ch).

Tasks and responsibilities
  • Management of the office
  • Leadership of the management team and one project team
  • Preparation of operational plan and annual budget
  • Acquisition of project funds / fundraising
  • Accountability to the Foundation Board
  • Taking care of relations with existing networks and establishing new relationships with funding partners as well as with the political and scientific environment

Requirements and qualifications
  • Degree in a social science
  • Several years’ experience working in international development cooperation
  • Demonstrable success in project acquisition and fundraising
  • Committed and engaged leadership approach (team, project leadership, organisational development)
  • Knowledge of relevant methods and approaches (e.g. M&E, impact assessments)
  • Excellent knowledge of English, German and French
  • Takes initiative, with an independent and thorough approach to work

NSW Footy Facilities Fund is accepting grant applications

The New South Wales (NSW) Footy Facilities Fund assists clubs in improving their facilities for a variety of benefits, including environmental sustainability and social inclusion. The fund is accepting grant applications until 9 January 2015.

The NSW Footy Facilities Fund aims to improve facilities for a variety of benefits including increasing participation, safety and security, environmental sustainability, social inclusion and building strong communities.

What are the NSW Footy Facilities Fund's objectives?
  • Increase regular and on-going participation opportunities in rugby league
  • Improve the standard of rugby league grounds and facilities

Your project must meet both of these objectives. Additionally, you may wish to address one or more of the following objectives to strengthen your application:
  • Improve safety at sport and recreation facilities (e.g. upgrade of field to provide a safer playing field, access pathways for players, disability ramps)
  • Increase the security at sport and recreation facilities (e.g. installation of fencing) 
  • Remove barriers to promote inclusion in rugby league (e.g. upgrade of amenities to increase female participation, provision of disability access, upgrade of referee amenities)
  • Develop environmentally sustainable sport and recreation facilities (e.g. installation of drainage, rainwater tank, upgrade lighting for environmental impact) 
  • Build strong communities

What funding is available?
  • Grants are available up to $75,000
  • The grant amount requested cannot be more than 50% of the project cost. The remaining 50% can be sourced from a variety of sources including in-kind support but should include, in part, local council support where the project is on council-owned or managed land

Applicants may apply for multiple projects or project types; however, funding will only be available to an organisation once during the three year life of the programme.

Applicants may only receive NSW government funding once for a specific project from either this programme or other NSW government programmes including those offered by the Sport and Recreation and the Community Building Partnership programme. You may apply under the different grant programmes for different stages of a project.

Applicants must contribute 50% or more to the project. This can include voluntary labour, donated materials and/or equipment or other resources. It is expected that the applicant will cover any administration costs incurred with the project.

Funding must be expended within two years of the date of the funding agreement.

Who can apply?
  • NSW incorporated, community based, not-for-profit organisations that are affiliated with the rugby league. This includes clubs or district associations.

When can I apply?

The University of Tennessee has an opening for a doctoral student in sport studies

The University of Tennessee (UT) has an opening for the fall of 2015 in its PhD programme in kinesiology and sport studies with a concentration in sport studies and a specialisation in socio-cultural studies. Application deadline: 1 January 2015


About the opening
The PhD concentration in sport studies with a specialisation in socio-cultural studies has an opening for a doctoral student. This position includes a tuition waiver, a monthly stipend ($500 to $1,000) and health insurance. The candidate will teach socio-cultural foundation courses in the sport management curriculum each semester.

Possible research areas include but are not limited to:
  • International sport/globalisation
  • Sport diplomacy
  • Women and sport
  • Sport in outreach and engagement
  • Sport and religion
  • Sport and (sexual) violence

UT encourages applications of candidates with an interest in conducting research in areas associated with UT’s Center for Sport, Peace and Society.

The sport studies concentration in the doctoral programme primarily prepares graduates for positions as faculty members in higher education. The coursework for the programme is developed between the student and the faculty advisor to meet the educational goals of the student. Students have the flexibility to develop a programme that allows them to focus on the area of study in which they have an interest.

Doctoral students will receive training in research design and methodology and are expected to conduct research outside the requirements of the classroom. The programme consists of 15 hours within the concentration, 18 hours of research courses, nine hours within the specialisation and a minimum of six hours in an outside or cognate area.

Additional information
The typical length of the PhD programme is three years, including two years of course work and one year of dissertation research.

The AGITOS Foundation has several internship opportunities



The AGITOS Foundation is the leading global organisation developing sport activities for people with an impairment as a tool for changing lives and contributing to an inclusive society. It is offering internships for three of its projects with flexible starting dates in 2015.

The AGITOS Foundation offers internships in these projects:

Road to Rio2016
Leading up to the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio, the AGITOS Foundation and the Rio2016 organising committee will host a series of workshops in Brazil on the topics of coaching, classification and sport management:
  • The aim of the project is ensure athletes and National Paralympic Committees (NPCs) are prepared to perform in Rio2016
  • You will support the application process and content development, manage the logistical aspects of the workshop, and liaise with NPCs and project partners in cooperation with your supervisor
  • Additional requirements are basic experience in project management and proficient written and spoken Spanish
  • Start/End: Flexible start in 2015 (duration: 6 months preferable)

Paralympic Awareness Toolbox
The Paralympic School Day (PSD) is a key education tool used to promote the Paralympic Movement in primary and secondary schools worldwide:
  • The aim of the project is to revise the existing PSD materials, and produce a flexible toolkit of school-based materials for NPCs to translate, adapt and use in their local context.
  • You will analyse existing PSD materials, define a standard kit, and manage the development of new education tools (including content and design) and liaise with NPCs and other partners.
  • Additional requirements are working experience in physical education or grassroots sport programmes for/including children and youth with impairments. Academic study in Adapted Physical Education is an asset
  • Start/End: Flexible start in 2015 (duration: 3-6 months)

It’s All About Abilities
The Paralympic Movement is a platform for people with impairments to showcase their abilities through sport. Paralympic athletes are pushing the limits of possibility through their elite sporting performances every day. The IPC has a long standing relationship with the United Nations and actively promotes the UN Convention of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities through its work and partners
  • The aim of this project is to review the key policy aims, networking platforms, and resource synergies of identified UN entities and other intergovernmental bodies, and support to formulate the development of synergies and a wider action plan
  • You will research and analyse existing policies, event schedules and fund streams, communicate with project partners, and support the development of an action plan and key messages for the AGITOS Foundation/IPC
  • Additional requirements: Knowledge and experience working with intergovernmental agencies. Academic study in policy and/or international relations is an asset
  • Start/end: Flexible start in 2015 (duration: 3 months)

Vacancy: Head of Sport for Development & Peace, Commonwealth Secretariat



As head of Sport for Development and Peace (SDP) you will set strategy, oversee the delivery of projects and manage the provision of technical assistance to member countries. The Youth Division (YTH) of the Commonwealth Secretariat works with member governments, youth leaders and young professionals to promote the development and empowerment of the 1.2 billion young people who make up over 60% of our population. The newly formed SDP team is an important component of YTH, promoting the use of sport and physical activity as a strategic and effective tool in delivering development and peace outcomes.

As head of SDP and a member of the YTH leadership team, you will help to set strategy, oversee the delivery of projects including the Commonwealth Sports Ministers Meeting (CSMM), and manage the provision of technical assistance to member countries in SDP policy analysis, action planning, monitoring and evaluation.

You are responsible for managing key relationships with external stakeholders including the Commonwealth Advisory Body on Sport (CABOS), the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), UN bodies (especially UNOSDP) and relevant inter-governmental bodies (including AU and CARICOM). You will also supervise the two other members of the SDP team.

To be considered for the role you must have a Bachelor's and/or Postgraduate degree in a relevant discipline such as sport, sport for development, youth development, or international development; and sound knowledge and experience in SDP.

This must be demonstrated by at least ten years' experience in delivering sport, development or peace-building projects, including three plus years' experience in leading national SDP programmes or partnerships. Also, your background will include at least ten years spent working in or with governments, inter-governmental or international NGOS, where you gained expertise in government policy development and impact evaluation.
