Call of interest: IWG chairperson 2014 - 2018

The International Working Group on Women and Sport (IWG) is calling for applications for the position of IWG chairperson for the quadrennial term 2014 – 2018.

The International Working Group on Women and Sport (IWG) is an inclusive global network of individuals and organisations that work together guided by the IWG’s mission: empowering women – advancing sport.

According to the IWG structure and member protocols, the IWG has two chairpersons that serve as the leaders of the IWG and its secretariat. The chairpersons are expected to represent the IWG, for example at meetings and events, or in print materials. They are responsible for implementing the decisions of the IWG and overseeing the work of the IWG secretariat. They are entrusted with overseeing the fulfillment of the strategic plan, ensuring that the work of IWG is in agreement with the body’s mission, aims and values, and ensuring that actions taken on IWG’s behalf positively impact its international reputation and overall image. The chairpersons are also entrusted with ad hoc decision‐making in cases where there is no known precedent or procedure or in connection to urgent matters. The two chairpersons propose a clearly defined division of labour and responsibilities, which will be approved by the IWG members.

The following skills, competencies and knowledge are expected from the successful candidate:

• Commitment to the advancement of girls’ and women's sport and physical activity
• Ability to add value to the design and implementation of strategies for change at the international level
• Knowledge and understanding of the international sports movement
• Commitment to influencing senior decision makers within political, governmental, non‐governmental and sport domains
• Ability to network, develop and nurture relationships with individuals and organisations
• Availability and capability of representing IWG at meetings and conferences
• Operating at a strategic and leadership level
• Ability to work proficiently in English language – other languages are an advantage

The selected person will be working in close connection with Ms. Ruth Maphorisa, who was elected as the other IWG chairperson in spring 2014 as part of the successful bid of the Botswana National Sports Council (BNSC) to host the IWG during the quadrennial term 2014 – 2018. Botswana will also host the IWG Secretariat in 2014 – 2018 and organise the 7th IWG World Conference on Women and Sport in Gaborone in 2018. Ms. Maphorisa will be the chairperson responsible for the conference and the secretariat, and other possible tasks depending on the division of responsibilities.

Unfortunately, the IWG does not have a budget to cover the costs related to fulfilling the responsibilities of the co-chairperson. It is expected that the candidates will be able to finance their participation in the IWG Annual Meetings and other events or meetings where they will be representing the IWG.

• Cover letter stating the motivation and the main advantages of the candidate (max. 1 x A4)
• Brief clarification concerning the financial resources reserved for fulfilling the responsibilities of the IWG chairperson (max. 1 x A4)
• CV of the candidate (max. 2 x A4)

The successful candidate will be selected and published by 30 September 2014. The term of office begins on 1 January 2015 and ends four months after the 7th IWG World Conference on Women and Sport.

German-African Sports Camp for young coaches

Opportunity for sports coaches from Germany, Ethiopia, Ghana, Tanzania and Uganda to attend a fully funded coaching camp in Berlin. Deadline to apply: 6 July 2014.

German-African Sports Camp
From 12-21 September 2014, young coaches from Germany and our African partner countries are getting together for a sports camp in Berlin, Germany.

In a series of different workshops, participants will get the opportunity to learn new training methods, new sports and about (sports) culture in foreign countries.

How can you take part?
Fill out the application form. In the best case, you present yourself through a short movie or a picture gallery – in the most creative way that you can.

Who can apply?
Any young sport coach from Germany, Ethopia, Ghana, Tanzania and Uganda between 18 and 25 years. A coaching certificate is not necessary.

How do you submit your application form (and movie/picture gallery)?
Send your completed application form by 6 July 2014. The application form can be accessed from the Comenga website.

To provide better insight to your work as a coach (your team or training group) and your sport, you can additionally produce a video clip (max. 5min, 10 MB ) or a picture gallery/collage (max. 20 pictures 10 MB) and send it via email to sportscamp@german-african-partnership.org.

Call for abstracts: AIESEP seminar

Open call for applications to present at an international seminar in Timisoara, Romania, on sport pedagogy and physical education. Deadline for submissions: 20 June.

Seminar Purpose
The purpose of the 2014 AIESEP Specialist Seminar in Timisoara, Romania, is to bring together experts in sport pedagogy and other specialists involved in outdoor and leisure activities in order to create a space of reflection and discussion on how to adapt to the increasing interest of society in this area.

One of the outcomes of the seminar will be an AIESEP position statement on the potential input of sport pedagogy and physical education teacher education to the development of a body of knowledge useful to practitioners in the outdoor and leisure fields. It is noteworthy that all around the world, a growing number of sport and physical education departments have opened new programmes preparing outdoor and leisure specialists. The seminar is expected to generate research projects and develop and reinforce networks for collaborations between AIESEP and other partners.

Call for papers
Any scientific research, implemented project, or front-line experience which corresponds to the congress theme and sessions may be presented as a poster presentation.

Abstracts of papers must be submitted before 20 June 2014 to aiesepfefstm@e-uvt.ro, and must comply strictly with the editorial instructions. They will be assessed by members of the Scientific Committee who will take into account the relevance and originality of the subject, the clarity of the text and compliance with the specific instructions.

Guiding Questions
Guiding questions for discussion will include, but not be limited to, the following:

• How do we define "outdoor and leisure physical activities"?
  -Where, what, when, for who, for what?
• What are the pedagogical competences needed to teach outdoor and leisure physical activities?
• What are the outcomes of effective outdoor and leisure physical activities?
• What is the place of outdoor and physical activities in the physical education setting?
• How best should we prepare educators for outdoor and physical activities?

Get your voice heard at the Commonwealth Sports Ministers Meeting

As the Commonwealth Games come to Glasgow, so do the Sport Ministers for the 7th Commonwealth Sports Ministers meeting. We, the Commonwealth Youth Sport for Development and Peace Working Group (CYSDP) will be presenting to Commonwealth sports ministers on the powerful role youth leadership plays in Sport for Development and Peace.

CYSDP
Established in May 2013, by the Commonwealth Secretariat, CYSDP is composed of 10 youth practitioners in the field of Sport for Development and Peace who have demonstrated a commitment to putting young people at the centre of sustainable development.

The campaign
We know that Sport for Development and Peace (SDP) is a powerful enabler of youth leaders, coaches, mentors and volunteers, helping us to gain valuable skills and competencies allowing us to contribute to society and develop leaders in our own communities. In our role to be the leading and driving voice for youth towards promoting best practices in sport for development and peace, we want to highlight the value of sport in advancing youth development to the Sports Ministers and ensure:

The Grassroot Project: Executive director

Sport and development employment opportunity at an organisation led by university student-athletes in Washington, DC.

Organisation overview
Founded in January 2009, the Grassroot Project (TGP) is the first non-profit organisation to be designed, initiated, and managed by current and former National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) athletes. TGP uses the platform of sports and the power of student-athlete role models to educate, inspire, and mobilise youth to lead healthy lives. Our vision is that one day all teenagers will be equipped with the information necessary to make informed decisions about their health; empowered with the skills and support to make healthy choices; and connected to key health facilities and services.

Position overview
TGP has grown tremendously in our first five years - taking our work from four middle schools to 43 and growing our volunteer base from 40 athletes to more than 500. In 2013-2014, we began a strategic planning process to both broaden the curricular depth of our programmes and to expand our geographic reach.

We are looking for a executive director who can lead our organisation through its next phase of growth.  It is vital that the executive director have strong business, interpersonal, and management skills, leadership experience in the non-profit world, and a passion for the vision of TGP.

Core responsibilities

1. Strategic Planning: Set, implement, and measure progress toward short- and long- term goals for TGP
2. Resource development and management: Institute a diversified and ambitious annual fundraising effort and ensure effective management of current donors. The executive director will ensure that TGP remains a financially viable organisation
3. Human resources and operations: Provide overall professional direction and support to a staff of programme managers and student-athlete volunteers, while maintaining accountability, transparency, and high-quality outcomes
4. Financial Management and Oversight: Lead day-to-day financial operations, including developing and implementing budgets, preparing financial reports, and advising the president and board of directors on key financial decisions

Qualifications

• Passion for innovative programmes that deliver public health services to youth, as well as for a youth-led and volunteer-led organisational model
• Demonstrated ability to develop strategy, deliver results, manage a team, and serve as a spokesperson for a team or organisation
• Strong aptitude for fundraising and building long-term donor relationships
• Sound knowledge and skills in budgeting, strategic planning, and business development
• Substantial work experience in non-profit management and leadership (5+ years of experience preferred)
• Educational background in a related field (Masters level preferred)
• Ability to develop rapport with internal staff and external donors and stakeholders
• Commitment to the overall goals and vision of TGP

Beyond the picture - surf voluntourism with WAVES

Call for proposals: Olympic Studies Centre PhD grant

The Olympic Studies Centre (OSC) is calling for proposals for 2015 PhD research grants. Grants will be allocated to proposals with a humanities or social sciences perspective. Deadline for proposals:26 September 2014.

We are pleased to inform you that the rules and the application form for the 2015 edition of the IOC OSC's PhD students research grant programme have been released.

The guidelines for proposals can be accessed via the IOC website or the attached documents.
As of this year, the grants will be allocated to candidates whose applications are submitted under two differentiated categories and objectives:

Category A: Open Subject
Objective: Encourage PhD students to undertake doctoral research with a humanities or social sciences perspective on any aspect of the Olympic phenomena. All projects dealing with the Olympic Movement and/or the Olympic Games will be considered.

Category B: National Olympic Committees’ Policy Priority (organised in collaboration with Olympic Solidarity)
Objective: Encourage PhD students to undertake doctoral research with a humanities or social sciences perspective on topics of interest to the National Olympic Committees (NOCs) of their country.

Proposal submission
The eligibility criteria, application procedures and deadline (26 September 2014) remain the same for both categories but for applications in the NOCs’ Policy Priority category (category B), the OSC should also receive a letter of support written and signed by the president or secretary general of the NOC explaining the significance of the research proposal for the NOC’s activities and projects.

Applications and all supporting documentation can be submitted in either French or English, the two official languages of the Olympic Movement.
